The Origami Shield is a full-face plastic shield designed to be affordable and accessible enough to be used on a large scale, helping to prevent the spread of Covid-19 and other infectious diseases. Face shields are easier to keep clean than cloth face masks and the plastic itself can be recycled when the time comes to discard it.

The Origami Shield is best used along with a cloth or N95 face mask in a hospital or other medical setting. In a non-hospital setting, it can be worn on its own to help protect yourself and others from the spread of airborne pathogens.

custom fit

What makes this face shield different from others is that it conforms to each user easily and without discomfort. Unlike elastic bands, the Origami Shield tightens gently around your head with an adjustable plastic strap.

better comfort

The result is a face shield that works like more costly alternatives with greater comfort, making a perfect fit that can be worn all day.

flat-pack protection

The simplicity of Origami Shield’s construction means that it can be easily produced on a wide scale by anyone with access to a laser cutter or stamping equipment. The face shield is made from a single plastic sheet and comes with a protective coating on each side of the plastic.

quick assembly

After removing the protective film, the Origami Shield folds together in a few short steps. Each shipment comes with detailed instructions to help with assembly.

the perfect size

Origami Shield tightens to be exactly the size you need it to be. Extra space is designed into the shield, allowing you to comfortably wear an n95 mask and glasses at the same time.

easy to clean

Once assembled, the shield is durable enough to be worn daily and sustain multiple rounds of sterilization before being recycled or disposed of safely.

At the beginning of March, 2020 the Covid-19 pandemic began shutting down the United States and I wanted to do something that would make a positive impact. After a few hectic weeks of prototyping I was ready to share the plans for an early prototype of Origami Shield to anyone who needed it.

A group called Fab Lab Recife in São Paulo, Brazil took notice and we began a fruitful collaboration which produced over 8,000 face shields for hospitals in the Brazilian region. This collaboration inspired me to produce the Origami Shield for sale to businesses in the US to help keep the re-opening efforts safe.

After the success of this collaboration, I had the opportunity to speak with the founder of Fab Lab Recife and host of Colabora Makers on his show about Origami Shield.
